Anaphylaxis

A trigger, the substance that causes your allergic reaction, can be any one of the following:

1. Food

  • Nuts

    • Peanuts - the main source of anaphylaxis in children

    • Tree nuts (eg. walnuts, cashews, pecans)

    • The main source of anaphylaxis in adults

  • Fish

  • Bird’s nest

  • Egg

  • Milk

  • Soy

  • Chinese herbs

2. Insect bites and stings

  • Bee stings (honey bee, wasp)

  • Ant bites

  • Dust mites

  • Other insect bites

3. Medications including but not limited to

  • Penicillin

  • Aspirin

  • Ibuprofen

4. Direct exposure to latex-containing

  • Gloves

  • Condoms

  • Infant pacifiers and bottle nipples

  • Rubber-handled racquets

  • Balloons

5. Other causes

  • Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA)

    • Often associated with medications or foods taken prior to or after exercise

If you have had a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), you are at higher risk for another life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).

The progression of a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) is often unpredictable, so initially mild symptoms shouldn’t be ignored — these can progress to a severe reaction that could have life-threatening consequences.

If you are or think you might be at risk of severe allergic reactions, it is important to see your doctor to be diagnosed and to receive advice on the right treatment for your condition
